Dental Crowns: When They Help and What to Expect

A dental crown covers a tooth to restore its shape and function when a smaller restoration may not provide enough protection. It may be considered for a heavily damaged tooth, a large failing filling or certain teeth after root canal treatment. A crown is not automatically needed for every damaged or root-treated tooth.

Why the examination matters

The dentist checks how much sound tooth remains, the gums, bite and symptoms. X-rays may be needed. Decay, cracks and the health of the pulp affect the plan. A tooth must be restorable for a crown to be useful; placing a cap over an unsuitable tooth does not solve the underlying problem.

Material choices and alternatives

Crowns can use ceramic, metal or combinations of materials. Appearance, strength, tooth location, biting forces and cost influence selection. Ask about the proposed material and any limitations. A filling, onlay or another restoration may preserve more tooth structure in some cases.

Replacing a missing tooth with an implant crown is a different situation from restoring a natural tooth. Your treatment plan should make that distinction clear.

What the procedure involves

After consent and any necessary treatment, the tooth is prepared and a scan or impression records its shape. A temporary crown may be used while the final restoration is made. At fitting, the dentist checks contact, bite and appearance before securing the crown. The number of visits varies with the technique and tooth condition.

Preparing a tooth usually removes tooth structure and can lead to sensitivity. Discuss potential risks, including pulp problems, chipping, loosening and future replacement. The process and recovery are not identical for every patient.

A crowned tooth still needs care

Decay can develop at the crown margin, and the surrounding gums can become inflamed. Brush and clean between teeth carefully. Avoid chewing hard objects and discuss grinding if relevant. Follow instructions about eating after fitting and attend reviews based on your needs.

Contact the dentist if the crown feels loose, the bite feels high, pain worsens or swelling develops. A crown has no guaranteed lifespan; its condition depends on the tooth, material, forces and maintenance.
