Adults can develop decay around existing fillings, between teeth and on exposed root surfaces. Treatment depends on the depth and activity of decay, the remaining tooth structure and your symptoms.

Early changes without a hole

Some early lesions can be managed with fluoride, improved cleaning, diet changes and monitoring. A dentist determines whether a surface is intact and whether this approach is appropriate. Sealants may help selected susceptible surfaces; they are not a universal treatment for every cavity.

When a restoration is needed

An established cavity may need a filling. More extensive damage may need an onlay or crown. If the pulp is affected, root canal treatment may be an option when the tooth is restorable. A tooth that cannot be predictably restored may need removal after discussion of alternatives.

Address the reason decay developed
